The Live Poets evening kicks off with soulful music from Leigh Strange before New Zealand's first woman Te Mata Poet Laureate, Elizabeth Smither, takes the stage. Bush poet Roger Lusby will MC.
Elizabeth Smither, New Zealand's first woman Te Mata Poet Laureate, has written five novels, five collections of short stories and eighteen poetry collections. She won the New Zealand Book Award for Poetry in 1990 and the Montana New Zealand Book Award for Poetry in 2000. In 2004 she was awarded an honorary DLitt from the University of Auckland for her contribution to literature and was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit. She was given the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement in 2008. In 2016 she won the Sarah Broom Poetry Prize, New Zealand’s most valuable poetry award.
Leigh Strange will open the evening with soulful, bluesy rock ballads. Writing and performing on piano, Leigh's first two original recordings were produced in Wellington in 2016.
