“Alchemy: a seemingly magical process of transformation or creation; the process of transmuting a common substance, usually of little value, into a substance of great value.”
In this exhibition glass artist Roz Speirs explores the alchemy of kiln formed glass through texture, form and chemical reactions.
After two years of working with fused glass, Roz continues to be amazed by the how heat, gravity and duration in the kiln can affect the end result in both subtle and dramatic ways.
For her, working with glass is a form of alchemy, where her designs on glass are transformed and brought to life by heat and gravity in the kiln. Some designs require a very precise schedule in the kiln, where an extra five degrees or a minute too long at the top temperature can ruin the piece. With other designs she puts her trust in the kiln, not quite knowing what the outcome will be.
Originally from Scotland, Roz emigrated to New Zealand in 2002, attracted by the lifestyle, climate and landscape. She is inspired by vast expansive landscapes and seascapes, and by the smallest details in pebbles, shells, feathers and ferns. It is this organic, natural essence of New Zealand that she aims to capture in her work.
