Your guide to events in Nelson, New Zealand
Sunday 5th November 2017
Athletics Nelson have launched a new event, titled The Nelson Half – Shoe Clinic Festival of Running, which will take place on Sunday, November 5.
The new half marathon will start at Saxton Field, with the course heading first to a Monaco loop followed by a section on the coastal cycleway west of Richmond and finishing on the track at Saxton Field. Also 10km, 5km and 2.5km options.
Schools could be the big winner in the new event. Each entrant can nominate a school, which will receive a cash boost of up to 50 per cent of entry fees. Runner and teacher Phil Costley praised the scheme: “This initiative encourages families, friends and whanau from throughout a community to come together, gain some unexpected funding and at the same time promote healthy exercise. Individually, each runner or walker will be rewarded with a commemorative medal to wear with pride as recognition of their efforts as well as improved fitness and friendships to kick start their summer.” Newcomers to this type of event won’t find it too daunting if they commit and start preparing early. Entering with a buddy to jog or walk is a good option for those not inclined to race as competitive athletes.
