Orienteering is a navigation sport where individuals or groups navigate their way through a set course, using a map and compass. The event caters for all abilities, from first timers to experienced. There are courses ranging from 1-10km. The event is run by the Nelson Orienteering Club. There are start times from 10:00am until 1:00pm, runners can start anytime between those times and venture around the course at their own speed. The Canaan Downs area is excellent for orienteering and a scenically incredible area - the forest is high altitude mountain beech, with highland grazing areas in between, the land is famous for the limestone formations, sink holes and caves.
There will be club members on hand to help anybody new to orienteering. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the adventure.
