Nelson Institute Talk: Putting Religions in the Spotlight.

Sunday 1st October 2017

Peter Donovan studied law, philosophy and theology in NZ, and has a Doctorate in the philosophy of religion from Oxford.
It is 140 years since the 1877 Education Act adopted the so-called “Nelson System” for religious instruction in NZ state primary schools. Incorporated with modifications in successive Education Acts, That model has for many reasons become unsuitable in today’s educational and social environment.

Peter Donovan's aim, in consultation with the Human Rights Commission and eventually,he hopes, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, is to facilitate an initiative in the Nelson area to develop and trial a new model. This model will be teacher-led and educationally-secular, and will allow schools to draw on resources from all world faiths, especially those represented in our local communities.
