Takaka Library: Robert Jenkin - Isaac Gilsemans' Art

Friday 24th November 2017

Join Robert Jenkin as he looks at Isaac Gilsemans' art and discusses questions relating to Abel Tasman's visit to Golden Bay 375 years ago.

In mid-December 375 years ago, Abel Tasman sailed into Golden Bay. Robert looks at Isaac Gilsemans' art and wonders if he created the first known European images of Golden Bay.

How do Gilsemans' images help us to understand the unfortunate events that followed? Were Dutch ships here in 1642 on a peaceful trade mission? Was it mutual misunderstanding that led to violence?

Gilsemans' art may help us to answer these questions.

Free. All welcome.
