First Encounter 375

Saturday 16th-Tuesday 19th December 2017

Four days of events marking the 375th anniversary of Tasman's voyage, the first recorded meeting with Maori (Golden Bay/Mohua--18/19 December) and the 75th anniversary of the establishment of Abel Tasman National Park. Read more here:
Events are designed to interest the community and visitors, who will include: the Dutch Ambassador, representatives of Tasman's home town (Lutjegast) and descendants of Ngati Tumatakokiri.
The programme is being developed in consultation with Manawhenua ki Mohua and main events are:
> Formal opening (16 December) with cultural acknowledgment
> Special Farewell Spit tour with Tasman-related commentary (the ships anchored off the Spit on 17 December)
> Water-based event--waka ama + replica of Tasman's small boat (18 December)
> Poroporoaki/Farewell event (Variety show:18 December)--end of official events
> Walk to Taupo Point--closest pa site to the anchorage in 1642 (19 December)
> Boat trips to Tasman's anchorage
> Screenings at Village Theatre of waka related movies/docos
> Exhibition at Golden Bay Museum
