Your guide to events in Nelson, New Zealand

Sunday 25th February 2018

TUi MAMAKi is a vocal explorer, performer, composer/arranger, born in France, raised in Aotearoa/New Zealand and currently residing in Bulgaria.

She can thank her musically adventurous troubadour family for giving her a taste for sounds from far-away places. In following her voice, she has travelled to Pay Basque, India and the Balkans to study traditional vocal techniques and repertoire. Her flair for languages has spurred the development of a polyglot sonic pallet – each language bringing out a different part of the vocal instrument – and has influenced her original compositions both as a singer-songwriter and polyphonic ensemble leader.

TUi MAMAKi also sustains a passion for voice coaching and facilitates voice and polyphony workshops in various communities and festivals around globe.

Haunting, spirited vocals over hypnotic odd-meter grooves. A meeting of delicacy and power. Original compositions inspired by TUi MAMAKi’s love affair with Bulgaria, spliced with traditional song, these are stories of love, harvest, death & transcendence.

“Powerful, microtonal vocals…” (The Listener – Nick Bollinger)
