Your guide to events in Nelson, New Zealand
Friday 17th August 2018
2018 marks the 125th anniversary of the signing of the Electoral Act that gave all New Zealand women the right to vote.
We are celebrating Golden Bay women and their stories as part of our Suffrage 125 celebrations.
In this event Tessa Gillooly reminisces about the trio of midwives who are part of her family's history.
First there was Mary Anne James who in 1856 arrived in Collingwood and began to see to the community's medical needs - including delivering babies. Mary's daughter Emma Louisa also became well known for midwifery, as did Emma's daughter-in-law Cicely.
Tessa is a proud descendant of these three women and looks forward to sharing family stories about them and their work.
Koha. All welcome.
