Richmond Library: Fun With Flax – Maori Weaving Workshop

It’s Maori Language Week from 6-18 September.

Let’s celebrate by learning how to weave te iti whariki (a small mat) with experienced weaver Yvonne Hammond.

Yvonne will also provide a display of her woven creations, including her World of Wearable Art entry Kaitiakitanga.

Participants will learn tikanga (Maori customs) and kaitiakitanga (protection and guardianship) and the skills of raranga (weaving).

Weather permitting, there will be an opportunity to harvest the flax for weaving.

12.00pm-1.00pm: Adult weaving session
3.30pm-4.30pm: Children and teenager weaving session

Space limited to 20 adult participants and 20 child/teenager participants. Bookings on Eventbrite are essential.
