Your guide to events in Nelson, New Zealand
Saturday 13th-Friday 26th October 2018
Back 1892, Nelson photographer William Tyree began giving evening lime-light slide exhibitions, projecting images from inside his studio onto the first-floor window. The first shows celebrated the Nelson Province’s 50th Jubilee and became an instant hit. This earliest picture show became a regular Saturday entertainment in Nelson, a time when shops would stay open until 10 pm, and large crowds gathered on the street below, while a brass band played from the balcony alongside.
As part of the A Century Of Saying Cheese Exhibition, the Museum will bring to life the ‘limelight cinema’ tradition of Tyree photo studio. Accompanied by live music and VJs, heritage photos will be projected onto the Museum building, every Friday night during the Nelson Arts Festival, including the famous Masked Parade and carnival.
