Biology is destiny – Phrenology.

Sunday 7th April 2019

In outlining the general principles of phrenology the speaker, Nigel Costley, draws on a sensational local example. The death masks of the Maungatapu Murderers. The pride of the Nelson Provincial Museum’s collection, these exquisitely gruesome artefacts were the work of dentist JW Tatton. They then became the subject of a learned lecture by phrenologist AS Hamilton and the cause of some controversy. A merry little yarn which serves to illustrate the practical application of this much-maligned science.
