Hot Club Nelson as part of New Zealand Music Month

Wednesday 8th May 2019

Hot Club Nelson consists of clarinetist Ian Edwards, Barrie McDonald on accordion, and Paul Gilmour guitar.
They perform acoustic music made popular by the famous gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt. This includes Parisian waltzes of the 1930’ s, as well as bossa nova and American standards played in the gypsy swing style.

Django Reinhardt (1910 - 1953)

Born on a kitchen floor in Belgium, Django began performing in Parisian dance halls at 12. He never learnt to read, and only later in life was taught how to sign his name. In 1928, a fire in his caravan left him with extensive burns to his body, and only two fully mobile fingers on this left hand. In hospital for two years, he re-learnt how to play the guitar. Thankfully many recordings attest to the speed, power and fluency with which he commanded the instrument, and his compositions also demonstrate his incredible musicality.
