Richmond Library: Whio, The Blue Duck

Thursday 19th September 2019

This month we’re focusing on the environment at Richmond Library. We’ve organised a range of informative talks which are designed to broaden your awareness of environmental issues.

In this talk, Jason Malham, Whio specialist from the Department of Conservation, talks about whio, New Zealand’s endemic blue duck.

Whio are a taonga (treasured) species that Māori have a strong cultural, spiritual, and historic connection with. Whio is also an iconic back-country species, and it features on the New Zealand $10 note.

The whio is only found in New Zealand, and is rarer than some species of kiwi. It is a nationally vulnerable species and faces a risk of becoming extinct.

Find out more about these fascinating birds at Richmond Library.

Jason’s talk on whio is free and everyone is welcome.
