Walking the Line: Blending classical and contemporary approaches in carving

Tuesday 5th November 2019

Celebrated artist Fayne Robinson (Ngāti Apa ki te rā tō, Ngāi Tahu, Te Rūnunga o Makaawhio, Ngāti Waewae, Pūaha te Rangi) has an international reputation for his unique talent for blending traditional and contemporary styles into his work.

At 17 years old Fayne became just the second member of Ngāi Tahu to go through the prestigious New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute at Te Puia – only four have ever been accepted. Recognised as one of the modern masters of carving today, Fayne has contributed works to a number of high-profile projects in and around Aotearoa New Zealand, most recently to Te Papa’s newest exhibition, Te Taiao.

In this talk, Fayne discusses how he navigates the line between traditional and contemporary carving, presenting a few of his artworks as a focus for discussion. His innovations include experimentations with light, colour, and new materials. A dedicated artist, Fayne’s commitment to creative evolution will inspire artists and enthusiasts alike.
