Richmond Library: Author Talk – Karen Stade

Tuesday 19th November 2019

Local author Karen Stade will be visiting Richmond Library as a guest of the Richmond Writing Group.

Karen is the author of Pasta, Prayers and Promise; a book about Nelson’s Italian community.

Now Karen Stade has written a new book, Driven By The Wind: The Memoir of Captain Henry Rose. This is a true story of 19th century sailing ships carrying troops to the Crimean War, coolies to South America, convicts to Australia and settlers to New Zealand. As a third mate, Henry witnessed four convicts being sentenced to 24 lashes each with the ‘cat-o-nine-tails’ for breaking into a storeroom and stealing rum.

It is a colourful tale of a hard life at sea. Don’t miss this glimpse into a fragment of New Zealand’s fascinating colonial history.

After Karen’s talk, you are invited to join the Richmond Writing Group for an optional hour of discussion or fun writing exercises from 2.00pm-3.00pm.

Free. All welcome. Bookings not required.
