Something fishy has been going on recently in Roz Speirs’ studio.
Fused glass artist Roz is our featured artist this month with an installation titled ‘Rainbow Reef’ featuring 100 wall mounted schooling fish. A scuba diver for the last 26 years, Roz has dived in breathtaking locations all over the world, including volunteering on a marine conservation project on a remote island in Indonesia. She has encountered hammerhead sharks, manta rays, sea snakes, lionfish and moray eels, and never ceases to be amazed by the beauty of coral reefs and the extensive ecosystems they support.
‘Rainbow Reef’ is inspired by the huge diversity of life which exists on and around coral reefs. “I’ve had this idea swimming around in my imagination for some time” says Roz, “and fused glass seemed to be the perfect medium to encapsulate the colour, diversity and fragility of the reef.”
Roz will be demonstrating how she creates her fused glass fish at a lunchtime demonstration on Wednesday 29 January from 12 – 1pm.
