Your guide to events in Nelson, New Zealand
Tuesday 14th-Sunday 19th April 2020
Nelson Yacht Club is proud to be hosting the Starling National Championships over the 14th - 19th April 2020.
The Starling class is an iconic New Zealand dinghy class, with some famous names on the national trophy including the likes of Sir Russell Coutts and Peter Burling. The nationals are held in the South Island every 4 years and were last held in Nelson in 2007. Nelson sailor Matt Vincent won the following year in 2008.
Whilst open fleet racing will most likely be held out in Tasman Bay (to get away from the strong tides in the harbour) it will be quite a sight seeing the boats coming and going from the Nelson Yacht Club ramp on Wakefield Quay. There will also be development fleet racing closer to shore.
The club is expecting ~70 boats, and with sailors generally between 14-19yrs there will be lots of families in tow, and making the most of their school holidays in Nelson!
The 14th & 15th are for registration & measuring, with the welcome and briefing at 18:00 on the 15th.
The on-water action (subject to wind conditions) will be 16th-19th, with 12 races scheduled. Keep an eye on the Nelson Yacht Club Instagram & Facebook pages for updates throughout the regatta.
