The Dawn Blessing is to remember those who have walked before us, and to offer a commitment to, and prayers for peace in Whakatū.
It will include an opportunity for attendees to offer karakia, prayers, waiata or hymns for peace, if they so wish.
Parihaka was invaded in 1881 by NZ troops, including 200 men of the Nelson Militia under the leadership of Major Pitt. The leaders and people of Parihaka sat peacefully on the marae while the children offered soldiers bread freshly baked by the women of Parihaka. Nobody was killed on that day. The leaders of Parihaka, Tohu Kākahi and Te Whiti o Rongomai, were arrested without trial. They were later kept under house arrest for 7 months in Nelson. In 2017 the NZ goverment met with the descendants of Parihaka for reconciliation and settlement of this wrong.
The non violent resistant response by Parihaka people and their leaders is a vital and pivotal part of our history, a guide to future peaceful relationships for all people.
