Community Kōrero: The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary

Sunday 16th January 2022

The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary is the second largest of its kind in New Zealand and the largest in the South Island.
It is a unique 690 ha eco-haven full of mystery benefitting both the environment and the citizens of the Nelson/Tasman regions. Many locals have become members and enjoy supporting this worthy cause.

Our mission is:

To restore a predator-free mature native forest, enabling people to engage with the natural world in a way that promotes environmental responsibility and our community’s health and wellbeing, and contributes to the recovery of our local and national ecosystems.

Since colonial settlement, the site that is now the Sanctuary has been mined for coal and been Nelson's water supply - and we will talk more about these historic aspects.

In this 45 min. presentation we will look at the history and timeline of the Sanctuary, what's involved, who's involved and how to get involved.
And of course we will cover the 2021 translocations (reintroductions) of Tīeke (South Island saddlebacks) and Kākāriki karaka (orange fronted parakeets). Two milestone events for the Sanctuary.

Vaccination Passes will be required for anyone over the age of 12
