Your guide to events in Nelson, New Zealand
Saturday 13th-Sunday 14th January 2024
Make your own handcrafted books using traditional bookbinding skills. You will learn the basic principles of this craft and how you can bring your unique creativity to a variety of book formats.
We'll begin with a simple pamphlet, explore a variety of concertina structures and then make a longstitch journal. These styles of bookbinding have been carefully selected to enable you to build your skills over the two days and continue making these types of books at home without the need for heavy equipment.
As notebooks, sketch books or storage for mementoes, small photographs, poems, stories etc, these books are both useful objects or sources of inspiration. The books will be blank allowing you to experiment further in your own time.
Facilitated by professional Nelson bookbinder, Rosie-Anne Pinney, you will be guided through the process of making books, using a mix of traditional and more contemporary materials and techniques.
All basic materials will be provided but bring some of your favourite decorative papers (A4 min size, 3 or 4 sheets max) to use as covering materials if you like.
Tools will be provided but you may wish to bring your own cutting mat & craft knife if you have one.
