Ngā Kaihanga Uku - Māori Clay Artist Collective Demonstration Panel

Tuesday 1st October 2024

Ngā Kaihanga Uku, the distinguished collective of Māori clay artists, will bring their unique talents and cultural perspectives to The Suter Art Gallery.

This event offers an opportunity for the public to engage with artists at the forefront of Māori clay work, blending traditional techniques with contemporary innovation.

Throughout the day, artists from the collective will showcase their skills in a series of live demonstrations, accompanied by a visual presentation offering insights into their creative processes and the cultural narratives that inform their work.

Attendees will have the chance to observe the artists at work, ask questions, and take part in discussions exploring the significance of uku (clay) within te ao Māori.

The event is divided into three two-hour sessions, allowing participants to either follow the journey of a single artist or engage with all the featured creators.

The lineup includes well-known artists such as Carla Ruka, Todd and Karuna Douglas, Baye Riddell, Elijah Revell, Dorothy Waetford, Wi Taepa, and Piri Cowie, each bringing their distinct style and perspective to the event.
