Nelson is the Craft Brewing Capital of New Zealand, and it is little wonder given that this is the only place in New Zealand where hops are grown commercially. Ten craft breweries and thirteen brands of craft beer are brewed in the area, and you can visit most of these by bike on the Great Taste Trail, including McCashin's Brewery which can be accessed via the Railway Reserve.
McCashin’s Brewery founder Terry McCashin can be given high levels of credit for the craft beer culture that exists today. Back when Terry started this craft beer revolution in 1981, the only beers available in New Zealand were made by two major breweries and were lacking in the subtle and distinctive flavours that Nelson craft beers are now famous for.
The historic Rochdale Cider Factory in Stoke is the home of McCashin's Brewery and Rochdale Cider is still brewed on site, along with Stoke Beer, Palaeo Water, Stoke Ginger Beer, Lemon Lime & Bitters. The Brewery is a ‘must visit’ while in Nelson and even better if you can fit in a tour.
