Richmond Library: Bar-tailed Godwits Talk with David Melville from ‘Birds New Zealand’

Wednesday 3rd July 2024

Bar-tailed Godwits are summer visitors to New Zealand including Waimea Inlet but they do not breed here. Where do they come from? Where do they go to when they leave New Zealand? Extensive studies of marked birds and remote tracking has revealed the extraordinary journeys godwits undertake – including the longest non-stop migration of any bird species.

Richmond Library welcomes ecologist David Melville from ‘Birds New Zealand’. David will speak about these extraordinary birds, some of the challenges they face from habitat loss and degradation, and encouraging efforts being made around the Yellow Sea to conserve the remaining habitat.
