Your guide to events in Nelson, New Zealand
Monday 15th July-Saturday 10th August 2024
"Alice Snow's Cabinet of Unnatural Curiosities," is an immersive exploration into a world where whimsy meets the macabre. Explore mythical creatures and plants that come to life in vivid colour and intricate details. Inspired by the rich tradition of curiosity cabinets and taxonomy, this series invites viewers to delve into a realm where the boundaries between reality and imagination blur.
The exhibition title is a play on Albertus Seba's renowned "[Albertus Seba’s] Cabinet of Natural Curiosities”. It presents a contemporary, playful twist on the traditional concept, and explores the artist's most imaginative and favoured ideas.
While Seba's cabinet showcased the wonders of the natural world, this series offers a glimpse into a parallel universe where uncanny clowns and unexpected anthropomorphic creatures reign supreme. Whether you're drawn to the allure of the fantastical or simply intrigued by unconventional faces and appendages, this exhibition invites you to step into the artist’s very own paradoxa of species; where the ordinary becomes extraordinary, and unimaginable comes to life.
