Your guide to events in Nelson, New Zealand
Tuesday 5th November 2024
At 5.30am at ANZAC Park we gather together to honour the leaders and people of Parihaka who have brought us a Legacy of Peace.
In 1881 NZ government soldiers, including Nelson regiments, invaded the settlement of Parihaka. The leaders and people sat on the Marae offering non-violent resistance. Children skipped and offered the soldiers fresh bread.
Parihaka men were imprisoned without trials. Tohu Kākahi and Te Whiti o Rongomai were held under house arrest spending 7 months in Nelson.
We remember this and commit to non-violence and peace in our beautiful and vibrant community in Whakatū Nelson. There will be opportunity for korero/speaking, karakia/prayer, waiata/song and a Peace Blessing. Nau mai haere mai. All welcome.
