Your guide to events in Nelson, New Zealand
Saturday 2nd-Sunday 3rd March 2024
At 600m (2000ft) it’s the highest altitude boat show in New Zealand, with mountain scenery that makes a perfect backdrop.
From early morning on both days of the weekend you can wander around the boats on land, chat with the owners, view displays with stories of restoration and rebuild and then watch the races on the lake in the afternoon. This is more fun than serious, from the slightly chaotic sail-past to the Seagull dinghy race with its Le Mans start and predictable difficulties starting recalcitrant motors.
The yacht race depends of the breeze (of course), there's a flypast from vintage planes, great food from the Captain's Cafe run by the local school, and a very friendly vibe. Most owners are happy to take passengers for a spin on the lake - so just ask.
No dogs as it's more or less in the National Park, watch out for the bumblebees and don't forget to pre-order tickets for the prize giving dinner at St Arnaud Lodge. See you there!
