Your guide to events in Nelson, New Zealand
Saturday 1st-Sunday 2nd June 2024
Irish Set dances are the traditional social dances of Ireland. The style is largely descended from the Quadrilles and Cotillions danced at the French court in the late 18th and early 19th century and was brought to Ireland primarily by dancing masters who adapted them to Irish traditional music.
Joining a set dancing class is a chance to take part in the Ceol Aneas Irish music and dance festival and experience some of the craic. It's also a fantastic opportunity to learn some sets. The classes are for both complete beginners and experienced dancers, and you do not need to bring a partner. Smooth-soled shoes are best.
Helen Stonehouse, the tutor, is coming to Ceol Aneas from Hawkes Bay where she lives. She has been teaching Irish dancing for 30 years, running classes in the UK before moving to New Zealand.
This year's set dancing class will be from 2.30pm - 5.30pm at the Trafalgar Hall (67 Trafalgar St) on Saturday and Sunday of King's Birthday weekend, and costs $50 for both classes.
