Your guide to events in Nelson, New Zealand
Saturday 12th October 2024
If you've been eager to learn the Maori art of flax weaving, join us for a hands-on workshop where you'll delve into the world of harakeke and create a putiputi (flower) and a kono (4-corner basket). Designed for beginners, this session offers a chance to explore the rich history and traditions of this ancient craft.
Led by experienced weaver Atawhai, the workshop will cover how to harvest and prepare harakeke, explain the protocols (tikanga) surrounding its use, and demonstrate basic weaving techniques. Participants will complete small projects, turning raw flax into beautiful creations.
This immersive experience, held at the Riverside Café, ensures personalized support in a small group setting. Don't miss this unique opportunity to blend learning with leisure!
Limited to 8 participants. $35 a person. Bookings close Thursday, 10th October at 2pm. Book here: https://www.riverside.org.n...
This workshop is proudly sponsored by the Riverside Community Trust. Please contact Tanja (at education@riverside.org.nz) for workshop questions or to ask about sponsorship options.
